About The Duke Inn
HILMARTON SWINDON ROAD SU 07 NW (west side) 6/262 The Duke Inn GV II Inn, c1850-60, squared rubble stone with slate eaves roof and decorative barge boards. Two storeys with cross wing to south, gabled to east front and twin-roofed main range with paired north gables. Stone mullion windows with hoodmoulds and C20 leaded lights. Cross wing has ridge stack and east front 3-light each floor. Main range has east front set back with ashlar projecting porch in angle, small 2-light under eaves above, 3-light to ground floor right and 2-light above, breaking eaves under barge boarded gable. Porch is ashlar with diagonal buttresses, Tudor-arched door with hoodmould and Jacobean-style shaped gable with portrait relief profile of Duke of Wellington. Hoodmould is carried around north side under parapet. Two north lancets and buttress between. North gables each have 2-light first floor window, ground floor has 2- light to left, 3-light off-centre and slate roofed porch to right with ashlar Tudor-arched east side entry. Large stack in roof valley. South side of cross wing has gable to left, small dormer gable to centre and side-wall stack to right. Slightly lower one- window west end section with west stack and south dormer gable.
