About The Castle Hotel
CASTLE COMBE MARKET PLACE ST 8477 (north side) 6/119 The Castle Hotel (formerly listed as Castle Inn, 20.12.60 building adjoining and house 15yds north, north east of Police House)
Inn and house adjoining to north-west, now hotel. Inn: c1820 refronting of 2 earlier buildings, C16 to C18. House adjoining: C16 or C17. Inn range: rubble stone, formerly roughcast, with stone tiled roof. 2 storeys. 2 earlier ranges facing south-east and south-west altered c1820 and linked by a curved section facing south to give roughly uniform facade with 16-pane sashes in chamfered flush surrounds. From north-west, a 2-window section with central door and north end stack, a recasing of a C16 or early C17 range with heavy internal timbers and large timber lintel north end fireplace, then c1800 curved section, 2-window range, one upper blank opening with painted sign, then north-east range, probably C17 origins. First bay has small upper dormer gable over door and 16-pane sash in unmoulded surround, and south end stack. Then straight joint to right end range, possibly C18 stables, altered: one long 3-light cyma-moulded window, moulded flush doorcase and at right end, C20 casement over C20 door and window. Moulded doorcase leads to cellar in 2 sections running south-west, one section ashlar vaulted, the other rubble stone vaulted. House range: attached at north-west end, C16 or early C17 rubble stone with timber framed upper floor. South end stack shared with adjoining range. 2 storey and attic, 2 window range. 2 C20 hipped dormers, 2 small 12-pane sashes to plastered first floor, 3-light ovolo- moulded mullion window with hoodmould, door, C20 shallow bay window and C20 mullion window with hoodmould. Interior of this range, much restored, has large timber lintel fireplace to south wall, timber-frame party wall to south and moulded stopped spine beams. Adjoining to north-west is early to mid Cl9 ashlar screen wall, probably built to close view from Manor House drive. Embattled with doorway, coped gable with opening and carved Scrope, Tibetot and Badlesmere shields.
