About Stockham Marsh Farmhouse

BREMHILL

1385/5/71 STOCKHAM MARSH 25-NOV-87 Stockham Marsh Farmhouse

II A farmhouse of the early C17 and the early-mid C19. Much of the original timber framing was rebuilt in brick in the early C19; the roofs are of slate, with brick stacks to the south gable end and to the ridge. The building is U-shaped on plan with the main range extending roughly north-south, and a wing extending westwards from the northern end, and another smaller wing extending westwards from the southern end. The main range is two-storey, of four bays, with three-light side hung timber casements, except for the single casement above the doorway. The door is C19, set under a C19 hipped lean-to porch with fish-scale tiles. The first floor windows have cambered heads, and those to the ground floor have rendered timber lintels. At the north end the roof is half hipped at an angle to the rear wing, which has a higher roofline and lower eaves line than the main range. This wing is of three bays, with two retaining their timber framing, the third in brick. The gable end of this wing has a half hipped roof. The smaller wing to the south is of two bays, with fenestration matching that of the main range.

Interior : the house is of lobby-entry plan, and has a chamfered spine beam with bar stops surviving to the right of the chimney stack. The room to the left of the entry has another similar chamfered spine beam with unusual fish patterned stops. The winding stair remains in its original position to the left of the entrance door. One original roof truss dating from the early C17 remains in the main range. The wing to the north retains its heavy timber frame and has a two bay roof with collar truss. The first floor room in this wing retains its layout as a cheese room, with C18 cheese racks extending floor to ceiling, and three of the loose cheese shelves still in place.
