About Foscote House

7/6 Foscote House

20.12.60 II

House, mid C17, rubble stone with stone slate roofs, coped gables with ball-finials and diagonally-shafted ashlar stacks. 2½ storeys, square plan, with twin-gabled front and ovolo-moulded mullion windows, hoodmoulds and relieving arches. Front has centre door in moulded four-centred stone surround within mid C19 stone porch, lean-to with front gable and depressed-arched entry. Windows each side are 4-light with king mullion to ground floor, 3- light to first floor and 2-light to attic. To east is added 2- storey one-window range with 3-light window each floor and hoodmoulds, the stonework suggesting that it is a C19 raising of earlier single storey range. West front is gabled to left with fenestration as on main front and wing to right has large 4-shaft ridge stack and ball-finial to south gable. Similar 4-light to ground floor and 3-light above. South end gable had similar fenestration but ground floor window altered for C20 glazed doors. To right a wing extends with coped east gable and south ground floor 2-light, first floor 3-light and attic hipped dormer. An added wing to east with east end stack has roof carried down low on south front. Interior: three good Tudor-arched moulded stone fireplaces to west rooms, two to ground floor, one to first floor. During the C19 the house was the Agent’s house for Grittleton estate.
